Challenging a Private Monopoly: Water in Rome 1865-1964

Abstract

As the provision of water was privatized in 1865, a few years before the seizure of Rome by Italy, and as this private concession was granted for 99 years, public attempts to challenge this de facto private monopoly have proved difficult in Rome until 1964. This lecture was about the history of such attempts, from the first progressive municipal governments in the 1880's to fascism.
