Résumé

The "decadence of the national theater" is an omnipresent theme in the debate on the performing arts in Brazil from the 19th century until the first decades of the 20th century. However, between a historiography that, until the 1980s, repeats the complaints of the time and looks for the "reasons" of the decline, and another one that, more recently, engages in the "recovery" of a so-called popular theater and tends to reject the complaints as a prejudice of a cosmopolitan elite that despises an art that appeals to the public, the reasons and effects of the debate have never been problematized. In our thesis, by taking seriously the word of the people involved in the theater at the time, we want to make a social history of the theater for a period of more than a hundred years, between the independence of Brazil, in 1822, and the end of the First Republic, in 1930. The debate about the decline of the drama is the starting point from which we want to analyze the formation of the Brazilian performing arts and, more broadly, its insertion in the society. Finally, we want to understand how, from certain positions, the actors manage to produce representations of the national identity. Our argument follows a chrono-thematic plan divided into two parts. The first part is dedicated to the debate about the decadence of the theater itself, which we analyze from its appearance, shortly after the country's independence, until the inauguration of the municipal theaters of Rio de Janeiro (1909) and São Paulo (1911). This part is divided into three chapters that follow a chronological order, corresponding roughly to the periods 1830-1850, 1850-1880 and 1880-1911. Each period corresponds to an alternation of generations of authors and actors, who cultivate new conceptions of artistic and literary work, bringing new elements to the debate, while giving it some continuity and updating an old idea that literature should have a mission of social intervention. Each of these moments is related to important dates in the Brazilian political and social evolution, which represent new challenges to which artists and writers must respond and adapt, but also new opportunities for their careers. The second part focuses on the theater of the 1910s and 1920s. Here, the main issue is the modernization of the Brazilian theater, which, for what we read in the historiography, would not have happened, while the modernist movement would have updated all the other arts. And yet, we see that the actors were aware of the need to change the theater, as the debate about the decadence of the theater becomes more and more that of a crisis. This part is also divided into three chapters. We begin with the analysis of theatrical buildings, their uses and their location. It is from the observation of the multiple uses of the buildings dedicated to performing arts, especially after the rise of the cinema, that we arrive at this metamorphosis of the terms of the debate. Then, we approach, the evolutions of the Brazilian theater in the first decades of the 20th century, with a particular attention to the ruptures that take place in this period and to the strategies to adapt the theater to the new times. Finally, since we argue that the contradictions in the discourses and in the practice, as well as the limits of the strategies put forward by artists and writers, are related to the position of Brazil in the space of global capitalism, we end our thesis with a chapter dedicated to the relations of Brazil with the world with a study of the circulations in which the country is inserted, in particular concerning the tours of the theatrical companies. Our idea is to show how and diverse identities are produced in tension with a cosmopolitan culture.
