Réponse à l’urbanisation d’un insecte eusocial : interconnexion des réponses génétiques, plastiques, et rôle de l’environnement social

Abstract : Urbanization is an ongoing process which tend to accelerate these recent years. Cities are imposing some environmental pressures on species living there: high temperatures, fragmented habitat, pollution (being sound, light, or chemicals). Despite their ecological and economic importance, few studies have investigated so far how eusocial species respond to urbanization. Indeed, those species could have different response abilities to environmental changes, because of their great phenotypic plasticity or their social life. This thesis objective is to determine how eusociality could impact response to urbanization. In a first chapter we demonstrated through a common garden experiment that Temnothorax nylanderi colonies better tolerate a trace metal (cadmium) than their forest counterparts. We also reported a behavioral divergence between those two populations (in foraging and aggression). In a second chapter, we highlighted that this differential cadmium tolerance could have a genetic origin. Using a cross fostering experiment, we also aim at disentangling relative contribution of workers and larvae in the better tolerance to cadmium in urban colonies. A lack of differential response the year of the study impede us to conclude on this point, but we highlighted a buffering of colony size and it limits. Finally, in the last chapter we investigated intra-annual variation in eusocial species response to urban stressors. Overall, this thesis emphasizes the importance to take into account social species unique traits to assess those species response to environmental changes.
